During this exercise, safety and maintenance professionals (as well as Florida Road Team members, FTA staff and other industry volunteers) work with sworn personnel from the Florida Highway Patrol and Florida Department of Transportation staff to conduct Level I inspections on trucks passing through the scales.
Teams of 5-7 volunteer professionals work simultaneously to move trucks through the event as efficiently as possible.
These inspections generally take about 10 minutes and our aim is to improve safety knowledge and compliance on the highway. Drivers are given documentation of the voluntary inspection and a copy is also mailed to the company’s safety director. Any major defects or possible Out of Service violations are referred onsite to the law enforcement personnel, who take over the inspection process and make official decisions.
